No. Days-to-cover and short interest as a percentage of float decide whether a squeeze is mechanically possible, and neither is on this page because we do not hold them. What this page shows is a change in daily flow.

Why compare each stock with itself?

Because the baseline differs enormously by instrument, driven by how much market-making activity a name attracts. The only meaningful question is whether today is unusual for this stock.
