Google Review Character Limits: Reviews, Responses & Best Length

August 1, 2026 · 4 min read

Short answer: Google reviews are capped at 4,096 characters — and owner responses share the same 4,096-character ceiling. That's roughly 600-700 words, far more than anyone should use. Here's what the limits mean in practice, and the lengths that actually perform.

The limits at a glance

  • Customer reviews: 4,096 characters. No minimum — a rating with zero text is valid (see how to respond to rating-only reviews).
  • Owner responses: 4,096 characters.
  • Display truncation: long reviews and responses collapse behind a "More" link after a few lines — most readers never expand them. The first ~200-300 characters do nearly all the work.

The ideal response length

The data and the platform's behavior point the same way:

  • Positive reviews: 2-3 sentences (150-300 characters). Echo the specific praise, add warmth, invite them back. Longer thank-yous read as performative.
  • Negative reviews: 3-5 sentences (300-600 characters). Enough to acknowledge specifics, state your standard, and move the conversation offline — short enough not to read as arguing. Past ~700 characters, replies to complaints start looking defensive regardless of content.
  • Rating-only reviews: 1-2 sentences. A paragraph under an empty rating is over-answering.

Why shorter wins

Three reasons. Truncation: anything past the fold requires a click most readers won't make — your key message must land in the opening lines. Perception: response length signals emotional state; measured brevity reads as confidence, walls of text read as damage control. Keywords: the local SEO value of responses comes from naturally echoing what reviewers praise ("wood-fired pizza", "same-day repair") — which fits comfortably in two sentences and gains nothing from padding.

One exception

Serious public accusations (safety, discrimination, fraud) justify a fuller response — future readers need to see the matter addressed substantively. Even then, stay under ~800 characters and route the resolution offline. Templates for the hard cases: negative review responses and fake review responses.
