How to Respond to Fake Google Reviews (With Examples)

A fake review — from a competitor, an ex-employee, or someone who confused you with another business — feels uniquely unfair. But future customers cannot tell it is fake, so how you respond still shapes their perception.

The strategy is two-track: publicly, respond once, calmly, stating you have no record of the interaction. Privately, report the review to Google (Business Profile → Reviews → Report review) and document why it violates policy. Never accuse the reviewer of lying — it looks defensive even when true, and it can complicate removal.

Copy-paste examples

1 · No record of the customer
"Horrible service, rude owner, total ripoff."
We take every review seriously, but we have no record matching this experience, and the details don't correspond to how we operate. If you are a genuine customer, please contact us directly with your visit details so we can investigate properly. If this review was intended for a different business, we kindly ask that it be updated.
2 · Wrong business entirely
"Their delivery driver threw the package over my fence and broke it."
We believe this review may be intended for another company — we don't offer delivery services, and we have no orders matching this description. We've flagged the mix-up. If we're mistaken, please reach out with your order details and we'll take it from there.
3 · Suspected competitor review
"Overpriced and dirty. The place across the street is much better."
We have no record of a visit matching this account, and our standards on cleanliness are something we're happy to let our other reviews speak to. Anyone with a genuine concern is always welcome to contact us directly — that door is open to every real customer.
4 · Ex-employee review posing as customer
"Management treats people terribly. Avoid."
This review doesn't describe a customer experience, and we believe it may come from a former colleague. Workplace concerns deserve a real conversation, and that offer stands through the appropriate channels. To our customers: our team's service is what we're proudest of, and your reviews here reflect that.
5 · Rating-only 1-star from unknown account
(1 star, no text, no visible history)
We'd genuinely like to understand this rating, but with no details we have nothing to act on — and no record of an unhappy visit that matches. If something went wrong, please contact us directly; we fix what we can see.
6 · Review about an incident that never happened
"Witnessed the staff scream at an elderly customer. Disgusting."
An incident like this would be completely unacceptable — which is why we checked thoroughly. Nothing matching this description occurred at our business, on any date, on staff records or camera. We have reported this review. If you believe you visited a different location, please update accordingly; if you stand by the account, contact us with specifics and we will investigate further.

What qualifies for removal

Google removes reviews that violate policy: spam and fake engagement, off-topic content, conflicts of interest (competitors, ex-employees), and harassment. "It is unfair" is not grounds; "this person was never a customer" with supporting detail can be. Report it, and be patient — removal can take days to weeks.

Respond while you wait

Removal is never guaranteed, so post a measured public response immediately. If the review later disappears, the response goes with it. If it stays, future customers see a business that handled an apparent mistake with grace.
