2-Star Review Response Examples: Recover the Almost-Lost Customer

Two-star reviews are the most useful bad reviews you will get. Unlike a drive-by 1-star, the 2-star reviewer usually explains exactly what went wrong — and often mentions what went right. That detail is a gift: it lets you respond specifically instead of generically.

Your goal: validate the specifics, reinforce the positive note if there is one, and give a reason to believe next time will be different.

Copy-paste examples

1 · Good product, bad service
"The food was actually great but the service was so slow it ruined the evening."
Glad the food delivered — but you're right, great food an hour late isn't a great evening. We've reworked how the kitchen and floor communicate on busy nights precisely because of feedback like this. We'd love a chance to show you the difference.
2 · Inconsistent experience
"Used to be my go-to spot. Last two visits were disappointing — different staff, lower quality."
Losing a regular hurts more than any other review. You're right that the team has changed recently, and consistency is exactly what we're working to restore. I'd genuinely value hearing what felt different — and I hope we can earn back your go-to status.
3 · Overpriced for the experience
"Nice place but seriously overpriced for what you get."
Fair feedback — at our prices, the experience has to justify the bill every single time, and this visit clearly didn't. That's on us, not on your expectations. If you give us another try, I hope we can change the math for you.
4 · Cleanliness issue
"Staff was friendly but the bathroom was honestly gross. Makes you wonder about the rest."
Thank you for being direct — you're right that a neglected bathroom raises fair questions about everything else. We've tightened our cleaning rota the same week we read this. Kind words about our staff noted and passed on; the rest we've fixed.
5 · Order mistake handled poorly
"They got my order wrong and acted like it was my fault when I pointed it out."
Mistakes happen — how we respond to them is what we actually control, and being made to feel at fault is the wrong response, full stop. We've talked this through as a team. If you're willing to come back, I'd like the chance to show you how it should have gone.
6 · Appointment rescheduled multiple times
"They rescheduled on me twice. The work itself was fine but the process was exhausting."
Two reschedules is two too many — good work doesn't excuse an exhausting process to get there. We've since changed how we book to keep buffer for exactly these situations. Thank you for sticking with us despite the hassle; next time should feel very different.
7 · New customer, weak first impression
"First visit. Not impressed — nothing terrible, just nothing special either."
"Nothing special" might be the most motivating review we've received — it means we had our shot and played it safe. First impressions are one-time things, but if you're open to a second one, we'd like to aim considerably higher.
8 · Partial refund requested in review
"Half the service was fine, the other half a mess. Honestly feel I should get some money back."
You shouldn't have to ask for that in a review — billing concerns deserve a direct conversation. Please contact us with your booking details and we'll review it honestly. And regardless of that outcome, the messy half of your visit is feedback we're acting on.

Mirror their specifics

If they praised the staff but slammed the wait, say exactly that back: "glad our team took care of you, but the wait was unacceptable". Specific replies convince future readers that a human — not a script — is paying attention.

Show change, not just apology

Where true, mention the fix: "we've added a second technician on Saturdays". A concrete change is the single most persuasive thing a future customer can read under a bad review.
